How does this work?
While we've tried to create easily understandable interactions within CharityVis, we realize that with over 5,000 charities and 8 or so attributes, things can get complicated quickly. So here's a quick rundown:
- The main graph in the center shows all our charities, with each one visualized as a small colored circle with varying opacities.
- The color represents category (see the legend to the right for details).
- The saturation of the circle represents the Charity Navigator rating. The more saturated the color, the higher the rating. Also, within each category, the higher up on the Y-axis a charity is, the more highly it's rated. The categories are stacked on top of each other, so you can compare categories overall.
- The X-Axis is user specified, with the charity Expenses as the default. Click on one of the buttons below the X-Axis to choose a different facet.
- To the right of the graph we have a legend and a map. These are interactive filters.
- If you'd like to focus on a specific category, click on that category on the legend. If you'd like to see several categories, hold down shift and click on more than one.
- The map is similarly interactive: click on a State label to see all charities located in that state, and hold the shift key while clicking several to see more than one at once.
- The charities themselves are also interactive. Click on a charity to bring up an infobox with see more details, such as name, tagline, and location. Further information can be found by clicking on "more info" off of that infobox.
The underlying data for this visualization comes from several sources, including Charity Navigator and GuideStar. Please note that this data is used for demonstration purposes only - we make no claims as to the accuracy or reliability of the information.
