For over a decade, the Computers, Freedom & Privacy(CFP) Conference has played a major role in the public debate on the future of privacy and freedom in the online world. The 14th annual CFP conference was held at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley April 20-23, 2004, and the theme was “Who is watching the watchers?”

The Clinic held a conference on the Law & Technology of DRM on February 27-March 1, 2007. The conference addressed current issues surrounding digital rights management, as well as the future balance of content protection, fair use, and privacy.
2002
On November 15-16, 2002, the Clinic sponsored a symposium on Enforcing Privacy Rights. This conference discussed issues regarding privacy in financial data, international data transfers, e-commerce, and government surveillance.
2004
In a case of first impression, the Federal Circuit rejected a consumer manufacturer of garage door opener’s effort to employ a controversial section of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the anti-circumvention provisions (1201), to distort the market by employing computer code to lock-in consumers and lock-out aftermarket competition. read more »

Chris Jay Hoofnagle, senior attorney to the Samuelson Clinic, argued in the San Francisco Chronicle that in order to fight identity theft, policy makers need better data on the crime. Specifically, Hoofnagle argued that banks should be required to report statistics to the public on the prevalence and severity of identity theft incidents. Currently, the publicly-available data on the crime are drawn from victim surveys, and cannot capture nuanced fraud trends. read more »
