The Web Accessibility Tutorial is a prototype of an information resource where UC Berkeley web developers can learn more about web accessibility and some important concepts. We found that certain students often rely on the web much more than others for accessing information, and we wanted to learn about ways we can make that easier.
Who are you?
This site is the work of three graduate students in the UC Berkeley School of Information Management and System (SIMS) during the Spring of 2005. We are:
- Tu Tran (tutran@sims.berkeley.edu)
- Vam Makam (vmakam@sims.berkeley.edu)
- Andrea La Pietra (lapietra@sims.berkeley.edu)
Please feel free to contact us if you have questions or comments about this site. You can e-mail us individually or e-mail the group at accessibility@sims.berkeley.edu
Thanks for visiting our site!
There are already many tutorials out there, why another?
In fact, we used many of the available resources, along with our own research experience, to put together this site. There were several reasons why we wanted to make this site:
- We want to present what we learned in a meaningful and sustainable format.
- Information overload. Since there are a lot of resources already out there, we wanted to provide a list of the most important concepts, but at the same time put them in various contexts - web design categories, legal guidelines, etc, rather than just a simple listing.
- Many sites just list the things to do, but don't show you how to do them. We wanted to implement them ourselves and share some of the design considerations we learned from testing with users.
- We also wanted to start a tutorial that helps create a sense of ownership at UC Berkeley. We hope that this tutorial serves as the beginning of a worthy resource, or at the very least, an inspiration to create a formal and useful one for the Berkeley community.
