About
This website displays 3 interactive visualizations that summarizes US Employment & Mean Income between the years 2016-2020, for the entire USA broken down by states.
- Mean Income Trend 2016-2020: Mean Income Trend for all major occupation categories in a chosen state.
- Mean Income by State: A geographical visualization of Statewise Mean Income with additional information about Mean Income by major occupation categories within the state.
- Employment by State and Occupation: A zoomable visualization that represents the hierarchical view of number of employed by major occupation categories in each state.
Use
The tool can be useful to researchers, journalists, professionals, students and anyone who has an interest in employment and salary trend. Examples include:
- Undergraduate/graduate students who are seeking for jobs
- High school students who are thinking about which major to pursue
- People who maybe thinking of switching their field of career
- Policy makers in government
Some tasks that can be accomplished are:
- Gain insight about career, industry, and wage trends in the recent years
- Compare compensation for similar professions across states
- Determine the highest wage industry in the US
Examples of insights that can be gained are:
- Data science wages are much higher in California than New York
- If your profession is gambling related, there are the most jobs in Nevada.
- Physicians get paid a lot more in these states (list of states here).

The chart shows the 51 US states, with the area of each box corresponding to the total number employed in that state. Use the slider to choose a year, then click on the state to view total employed by occupation (zoom in). Click the top gray bar to go back (zoom out).
